New Challenge Designed to Fight Hypertension On Monday, we kicked off a new challenge asking health care professionals to submit tools they use to improve hypertension among their patients. We are also hosting a webinar to help explain details about the challenge on August 5. You can sign up for the webinar.
The challenge is a part of Million Hearts®, a national initiative to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. Check out the news release announcing the project. Federal Advisory Committee Schedule Week of July 14 The Health IT Standards Committee meets Thursday virtually at 9:30 am EDT. Agenda and materials will be available on HealthIT.gov. ONC Internship Opportunity ONC is looking for a student intern interested in health IT, health care, health policy, health quality, or public health. We are looking for someone who has a strong research background with analytic, verbal, and written communications skills who can excel in a fast-paced environment with the ability to juggle multiple tasks.

Data Brief Highlights Increases in ePrescribing We posted a new Data Brief that looks at the rate of e-prescribing nationally and locally since December 2006. Results from our analysis show that seven in ten physicians use electronic health records to e-prescribe and close to six in ten new and renewal prescriptions were sent electronically, accounting for roughly one billion transactions. Results also show that 96 percent of community pharmacies accept e-prescriptions. Promoting Patient Safety by Managing Risks Promoting Patient Safety Through Effective Health Information Technology Risk Management is a research report that looks into the challenges faced by hospitals and ambulatory practices that implement health IT risk management interventions. The report found that health IT safety often competes with other priorities within health care organizations, but those organizations using electronic health records see them as a solution to patient safety problems.
A blog post by Kathy Kenyon and Amy Helwig summarize the research report, but also suggest some solutions ONC has available, including the SAFER Guides and a guide on How to Identify and Address Unsafe Conditions Associated with Health IT. New CMS Interactive Tool Released Back in May, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that—if finalized—would grant flexibility to providers that are not able to fully implement 2014 Edition certified EHR technology in time to attest to 2014 requirements for the EHR Incentive Programs.
To help inform providers about the options presented in the NPRM, CMS created an interactive tool. Check it out and see where you may fit. Also, we encourage you to provide your comments on the proposed regulation by July 21 (see the NPRM for submission requirements for comments).
